A Collection of Thoughts About Gucci

Posted on April 01 2022

By Carleton Varney- Special to the Palm Beach Daily News

I recently headed to Broward County to see a movie at a multi-screen theater in Pompano Beach (which is not a bad drive from Palm Beach). The movie was “House of Gucci” starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, and I would recommend it.

Some of my friends had told me they expected the film and its stars to be nominated for Oscars, so it came as a surprise when they were not.

But other friends who understand the motivations of those who vote for the Academy Awards told me Lady Gaga is not yet considered part of the Hollywood community, even if she had been nominated for best actress for the 2018 version of “A Star is Born.” Hollywood people, my friends said, tend to nominate and vote for Hollywood people, not outsiders who make a film or two, despite how well they do in the role.

But being a Hollywood outsider myself, I would have happily voted for Lady Gaga, had I been given the chance.

When I think of Gucci, I think of its famous logo of overlapping capital G’s. But just as prominent in my mind is the fashion house’s signature color branding – a single red stripe bordered on either side by stripes of green. The color combination perfectly complements the color of Gucci leather goods.

If you are decorating a room in your home — maybe a library, a living room or a family room — you might take inspiration from the Gucci colors when planning your space. Here’s a bold scheme in that vein.

Begin by painting your walls the color of Gucci’s green ribbons and then carpeting your floor — or laying vinyl tile — in Gucci ribbon red.

For seating, I’d choose upholstery of light-colored leather, perhaps on a three-cushion sofa. Accent the sofa with some red and green throw cushions. To cover your club chairs, I would consider a handsome plaid of red, green, yellow and blue.

Next, think of that gleaming Gucci logo and choose lamps with bright brass bases topped with shades of rich red linen. For the walls, hang some lithographs or Piranesi prints to give the space a chic Italian atmosphere.

The Gucci look of today may also include the color coral. A beautiful vase of coral dahlias — placed on a brass-legged coffee table with a glass top — would bring life to the room.

One other Gucci note: If you have seen the new advertising campaign for the Gucci Pineapple collection of menswear, you may have noticed that the fashions were photographed in Palm Beach at The Colony. The backgrounds include the colorful guest rooms and corridors that our team at Dorothy Draper & Co. created several years ago.

The ad campaign is worth a look, as are Lady Gaga and Adam Driver in “House of Gucci.” I know the Oscar nominating committee didn’t agree with my opinion about the stars. But I also recall that Errol Flynn never won an Oscar, nor did Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day, Betty Grable or Glenn Close. It’s a world where everyone can’t be the winner.

    Dear Mr. Varney,
Great insight on the Oscar event! Talent is talent and I also appreciated Lady Gaga’s performance. Isn’t that the object of the awards, to give notice to those who are successful with their acting? No matter what in crowd is popular?

    Blessings, Pam

I agree with every word! And I adore the work you did on the Colony! Going down to Palm Beach this Sunday for a week buying trip with clients!
    Dixie Highway, here we come!

I wholeheartedly agree with you about Lady Gaga. She was great. I loved your ideas about changing a room with the Gucci inspiration. I pictured it in my mind with every word I read. So English Club like. So bold but a cozy place to be in. So right for the polo set. And it will need books and books, and a few loving cups. Maybe some animal antlers (can be fake) on a wall. Prints of dogs and horses on the walls. I want it.

As always, every point is on target. Thank you! 🌴
