After The Oscars

After The Oscars

The Oscars come but once a year – as does Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and my birthday – thank you Lord!

Oscar Day says a lots of things to me and brings back memories of my association with Hollywood stars – Grace Kelly, Joan Crawford, Van Johnson, Judy Garland and some others as well. Grace was a visitor to the Greenbrier Hotel at White Sulphur Springs, as was her Philadelphia family – a resort Dorothy Draper & Company has been decorating since way back when Hollywood was still enjoying its Golden Years – while I was still a child in the 1940’s and 50’s.

I did happen to enjoy the company of the Princess on occasion or two. In fact, to celebrate one of her visits to the Greenbrier, I hung in the President’s Parlor a portrait of the Royal American born princess. The portrait is one of two originally commissioned by Prince Rainier for the Pink Palace in Monaco. It was the Prince’s favorite portrait of his wife, painted by the American artist, Ralph Wolfe Cowan. Those of you who visit the Greenbrier can always enjoy seeing the portrait in the North Parlor.
