Checkerboard motif a winner at Green's

By Carleton Varney-Special to the Palm Beach Daily News

If you haven’t been to the Green’s Pharmacy Luncheonette lately, you’ll find that the Palm Beach breakfast and lunch hangout has a new look that’s being admired by the faithful.

John O’Neill, the Palm Beach attorney, breakfasts there almost daily, seated at the table for two at the front window at Green's, 151 N. County Road. John says he misses the familiar wall mural with the waterfowl and the beachfront, but the staff behind the new checkerboard-patterned counter tells me the management will soon add pictures of old Palm Beach for a friendly vintage touch.

Not only is the countertop now checkerboard — in black and white — but the facing of the counter lines up with checkerboard, a nice detail in the playful new décor.

Take a glance at the new floor and you’ll find vinyl tiles laid — yes, you guessed it — in the same checkerboard pattern.

The re-do has included what I think is a welcome change: The counter stools are gone, so none of us will teeter as we enjoy our scrambled eggs or BLTs. The seats all have backs, and that is a plus-plus.

Green’s has also changed the seating at the tables. John now sits at his front table on a chair with a black frame and a black vinyl seat.

The other color in the new café is burgundy red, which is used as an accent on the painted half wall that separates the dining from the pharmacy itself.

I’m glad Green’s went for the black-and-white checkerboard motif, which is so appropriate for a diner. But that design has been with us through the ages — from the flooring in old-world castles and chateaus, to the flooring in department stores and grand hotels.
