Hearts and Flowers Are So Apropos Right Now

Hearts and Flowers Are So Apropos Right Now

By Carleton Varney- Special to the Palm Beach Daily News

Super Bowl 2019 has come and gone, and we shall await champion New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s performance next season at the ripe age of 42.

On Saturday, we also celebrated the performance of Punxsutawney Phil, my favorite groundhog, who didn’t see his shadow. And that means that spring should come early — hooray! I can’t wait for the daffodils and crocus to pop out their heads in northern gardens that have seen so much snow and ice this year.

Speaking of flowers, Palm Beach will soon see red roses everywhere, thanks to Valentine’s Day on Thursday. The holiday can be celebrated with lots of sparkle in the Florida sunshine.

If you are at all a spring flower person, you’ll want to stop by Fritz Gallery, 211 Royal Poinciana Way, for its exhibition of works by artist Bruce Helander, who has deep Palm Beach roots.

If I had to pick a word to describe Bruce’s painted acrylic embellishments on printed fabrics, I’d choose “fabulous.” I certainly can envision them adding color to a home or office. The 52-inch-square works depict blooms such as lilies and wild roses — large enough to convince even the most shadowy groundhog that spring is on the way.

Bruce’s fans love his whimsical manner, with his green-framed glasses and colorful fashion sense, which always includes a merry hat. His show runs through Feb. 16.

While shopping for art on Royal Poinciana Way, you’ll want to visit the new interior design and furniture accessories shop named Como at 253 Royal Poinciana Way. Opened this season, the shop features products in new and classic styles, all fabricated and manufactured in Europe. You’ll find items from Portugal, Italy and Spain — sofas, chairs and chests of drawers.

As to the design and quality of the furnishings, including the throw pillows, it’s rare, indeed. I’ve not seen their like in many decorating shops in America. Proprietors Monica Oberting and Andrea Huainigg are so helpful and knowledgeable about their inventory.

And if you’re shopping for Valentine’s Day, which is just around the corner, Palm Beach shops are filled with items to catch your fancy and please your love. Shop locally!

Meanwhile, I send my best Valentine's wishes to all.
